Bias tees are all about power. No entity on our planet, be it human or machine, can run without some sort of source of energy. There is no perpetual motion machine, so power is a constant concern, whether one is deciding what to have for breakfast or attempting to set up a network.

When dealing with radio-frequency signals, the way in which power is distributed to a given cable is very important. In the same way that too much coffee can make a person jittery, too much unshielded power can interrupt the workings of a signal. You might even say that signals get "distracted" when there is too much electrical noise around, a situation which often leads to incomplete data transmissions.

Bias Tees Focus Signals

One of the best ways in which to supply clean power to a cable is through the use of a bias tee. These devices are most commonly used with coaxial cables. The problem with such cables in an RF setting concerns the fact that signal distortion can result when coaxial cables are hooked up to systems that run on DC power.

A bias tee, however, allows DC power to pass to such a cable without disturbing the signal in question. This process allows for smooth transfers of signals through coaxial lines. A signal that comes through loud and clear will be much more useful than one that takes too many digressions (or coffee breaks, as it were) along the way.
