RF termination devices allow for a given transmission to stop. While such an aim sounds quite simple, it's important to realize that the failure to put an end to a given signal can have undesirable repercussions. The most common of these effects is signal reflection.

Reflection occurs with signals that are carried along cables. Once a signal reaches its destination, it doesn't necessarily stop--portions of the signal can travel back along the lines, leading to unwanted noise. Luckily, RF termination units can reduce such reflection to feasible levels.

Controlling reflection is especially important when it comes to testing RF devices. When a particular network is being tested, it is wise to terminate all ports that are not directly involved with the test. That way, the results generated by the test are less likely to be influenced by irrelevant RF activity.

Problems with RF Termination

One of the problems associated with RF termination products is overheating. As these units are designed to absorb power, they can become quite hot in a hurry. It's important use a device that is specifically calibrated to the impedance of a given line or port. By using proper equipment, reflection can be effectively reduced while excess heat is avoided.
