Asbestos contractors are typically hired to work on homes or buildings that have asbestos materials in their construction. Contractors can be used to demolish, renovate, reconstruct, or remodel buildings, depending on whether or not their asbestos contents are considered to be hazardous. In general, any asbestos materials that can be scraped, scuffed, sanded, or cracked to create dust are considered hazardous to human health. Asbestos is only harmful when its dust is inhaled or ingested in some way.

Uses for Asbestos Contractors

All asbestos contractors must be registered by the ACRU, or Asbestos Contractors' Registration Unit. The ACRU operates under a state legislative mandate to make sure that contractors are working safely with asbestos materials. Registration is necessary because improper removal of asbestos materials could result in severe asbestos exposure. Those who have been exposed to asbestos may then suffer from symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, and shortness of breath. Serious diseases such as cancer and asbestosis could develop as well.

The ACRU provides valuable information about contractors to the public, employers, employees, and government agencies. It also evaluates applications for registration, deals with registration renewals, disciplines registrants, and assists compliance efforts of the Cal/OSHA Enforcement District Office. The ACRU can be contacted to obtain information about asbestos registration, application materials, contractors, and asbestos removal regulations.

When selecting a contractor, there are a few questions that should be asked. Fist, contractors should be asked if they are licensed and registered with the ACRU and any necessary state departments. The cost of asbestos removal and what this cost includes should be discovered as well. Some may even ask for references from previous customers. It is important to choose a good asbestos contractor because overall health is at stake when asbestos materials are being altered or removed.
