Asbestos Management

Asbestos management refers to acknowledging and monitoring building materials that are made from asbestos. Most of the buildings that require management have been around for many years since asbestos is no longer a common element for new building materials. Buildings that require management are typically larger buildings, such as schools, that have large amounts of traffic coming through their premises. Any building with asbestos that has employees, personnel, or customers coming through must be managed properly to prevent harmful asbestos exposure.

Requirements for Asbestos Management

The first step in asbestos management is identifying all areas of asbestos materials in a building. Then, these areas must be carefully inspected to make sure that asbestos fibers are not being released into the air. Any renovations or changes to building areas should be carefully planned and monitored to prevent asbestos exposure from occurring. Finally, building managers should make sure that they are complying with all federal, local, and state regulations regarding asbestos.

Asbestos management plans are designed to provide safe conditions for humans in buildings made from asbestos materials. Plan requirements may include building inspections, hazard assessments, keeping inventory of asbestos materials, environmental samplings, and asbestos exposure monitoring. Some programs will provide personnel with asbestos awareness training and program coordination techniques as well. Videotapes can be purchased to teach about the effects of asbestos and how to properly manage asbestos materials.

Asbestos management companies are available to help monitor building inspections and the removal of hazardous asbestos materials in buildings. They are often used to make sure that asbestos is removed in the safest way possible. When asbestos is removed improperly, the exposure risk can increase dramatically. Some building managers may not want to hire an asbestos management company for help. However, these companies can make the process less complicated because they have complete knowledge of all rules regarding asbestos upkeep and removal.
