Asbestos Removal
Written by Jill Morrison
Removing asbestos from homes or buildings can be a tricky maneuver. All buildings with asbestos materials must be evaluated to see whether or not they are releasing harmful asbestos fibers into the air. If this is the case, the asbestos materials should be removed as quickly as possible. However, building owners should not attempt to do this without help from licensed asbestos contractors.
Proper Asbestos Removal Techniques
There are some basic rules that should be followed during asbestos removal. These rules have been established to make sure that health and safety are not compromised in the removal process. All workers should wear protective clothing when dealing with asbestos. Clothing items such as disposable coveralls, rubber boots, and disposable gloves are necessary. Workers should also wear appropriate respirators to protect them from inhaling harmful asbestos fibers.
Any building areas where asbestos is being removed should be contained with plastic sheeting. This will ensure that all asbestos debris will be captured for removal. Wetting asbestos is a crucial step in the removal process. All asbestos materials should be completely saturated with water to keep asbestos fibers from being released into the air. Asbestos debris should be kept wet until it is packaged and sealed as well.
After asbestos debris is packaged and sealed it can then be disposed of properly. Asbestos waste must be kept in double sealed containers with asbestos labels on them. Each container should also be labeled with the name and address of the location where the asbestos was removed. Waste containers should be transported carefully so that asbestos fibers will not escape into the air. Asbestos waste can only be disposed at landfills approved by the Division of Air Quality.
