Patios are a great way to extend the reach of your home to the great outdoors. They're the perfect place for a summer barbeque or simply an afternoon lounging in the sun. If you're interested in adding a patio to your home, you'll be happy to learn how easy it actually is to construct one.

Building a Brick Patio

Depending on whether you're doing the job yourself or are using a hired contractor, constructing a patio shouldn't take more than a few days to complete. The first step involves digging out a six-inch hole where you're going to be placing the bricks. It's important to make sure that this hole slopes gradually away from your home to facilitate water runoff.

The next step is laying crushed stone down over the entire patio area. To create a solid, flat patio without any sink holes, it's also very important that you pack down the soil and stones as much as possible. This can be done with a heavy roller that you can rent from a tool supply shop.

Before you lay your bricks, you'll probably want to plan ahead to prevent your patio from becoming a weed haven. The best way to do this is to cover the entire area with pieces of landscape fabric. Overlapping these strips by at least a few inches is the best way to make sure that weeds will be unable to penetrate this layer. Once you've laid down the fabric, all that's left is putting down your bricks!
