Restoring an old home can be a lot of fun, but it can also be frustrating. Any restoration project requires some level of destruction and demolition, and you'll probably find yourself agonizing over whether or not you should make a particular change. When rebuilding an old home, it's always important to think of restoration before you think of replacement.

Restoration: Making Tough Choices

The first rule of thumb is to make sure that you never throw anything out that might have some value. It would be a shame to waste a sturdy handcrafted piece of furnishing that really only needs a bit of TLC. If you're not sure what to keep and what to trash, consult with a restoration specialist and have them take at a look at the house for you.

There are countless published guides and websites out there that can help you get a handle on your restoration project. You can do a lot of the work yourself, but for more delicate projects you might want to contract a specialist. If you live in an area with a lot of older homes, there are undoubtedly tons of craftsmen who have the knowledge and specialized skills required to bring your old home back to life.

Another problem with restoring older homes is updating them without giving them a confused look. Mixing modern materials with old-style construction doesn't always work, and it takes a lot of thought and planning to make sure everything fits together nicely. A good way to get some ideas is to drive around and look at other old homes that have been restored. Take note of what other people have done that looks good, and apply it to your own project.
