Roofing And Gutters

Your roof is probably the most important exterior surface on your house, since it is the one that takes the most abuse from Mother Nature. Keeping your roof in good shape is absolutely essential if you want to avoid problems like leaks and structural damage. You probably don't think about your roof very often, but it's important to check up on it at least once or twice a year to make sure it's in good shape.

Maintaining Your Roof and Gutters

If you notice some missing or cracked shingles on your roof, it's a good idea to get on a ladder and check out the entire roof. A single breach in the shingle layer can let a lot of water in, which can lead to costly problems on the inside of your house. Whenever you notice a problem with your shingles, make sure you take care of it quickly.

Replacing missing shingles is a relatively easy procedure, and it doesn't require many special tools. If you are replacing shingles, look around at the quality of the other shingles on the roof. If you notice that most of the granules have fallen off the shingles, it's probably time to redo the entire roof.

Keeping your gutters clean is also necessary to ensure proper drainage around the house. When you clean your gutters, be as gentle as possible so that you don't rip them out of their (often delicate) mounting brackets. If you notice areas where the gutter has broken away from the roof, refasten it as soon as possible so it doesn't come crashing down during a heavy rain storm.
