Many people dream of having a swimming pool in their backyard. If you're lucky enough that you have the money and the property to do it, you have some decisions to make. Will you choose an in-ground or above-ground pool? How large are you going to make it? The answers to these questions usually depend mostly on your budget and the size of your property.

Picking a Swimming Pool

The main choice when picking out a swimming pool is of course whether it's going to be in-ground or above-ground. Above-ground pools are usually a lot cheaper than in-ground pools. They can be installed much faster, and they are also more ideal for small backyards where you'd be unable to fit a large in-ground pool.

If you choose to buy an above-ground pool, you may be surprised to learn that you can actually install it yourself! All you need is a few helpers and a few free days, and you can be swimming in no time. In-ground pools, on the other hand, are a much bigger job.

If you've decided on an in-ground pool, you'll almost certainly need to hire a contractor. Pool builders usually have a lot of designs to choose from, and if you want to expand your options you can get estimates from several different contractors. If you're looking for a totally customized pool design, look for a contractor who is willing to work with you on the overall layout and look before they begin construction.
