Six Sigma engineering is an approach to product development that seeks to cut production costs and maximize profit margins. Don't all product development strategies attempt this, you ask? Not so. The difference here is in the innovative approach to enhancing product quality.

Often called DFSS, or Design for Six Sigma, Six Sigma engineering relies on quality control strategies to make a better product. In fact, the goal is to make the very best product available, with the idea that it will be more cost effective in the long run. In the early stages of product development, this may seem counter-intuitive, as people seek to stretch their money over the long-haul; however, further reflection quickly highlights the strengths of this approach.

Imagine you create the perfect product. There are no flaws or defects, and therefore, no complaints. You do not need a warranty, or to staff a customer service office. You do not need to deal with refunds, complaints, or faulty merchandise. These are the aspects that make business ineffective and costly, and they can be addressed easily at the outset.

This is precisely what Six Sigma engineering seeks to do. It uses statistical techniques to assess and analyze a potential product, and to forecast potential problems. These issues can then be addressed before the product hits the production line. A little strategic planning at the outset can save you substantial money over the long-haul if you draw on the right resources.
