Wholesaler and Distributor Options

As an online vendor, you'll need to determine where you will purchase the products you plan to sell. Depending on the nature of your products, you may be able to get them from a wholesaler and distributor, a company that will both sell you the products and ship them to your customers. You can even, in fact, purchase your products after you have been paid for them.

That may sound a little strange, but it's a common practice in online selling. After all, you would probably prefer to avoid the issues of purchasing, storing, and insuring an inventory. Without a huge capital outlay on products, you will be able to concentrate on marketing, selling, and administration. If you knew of a way to make a reasonable profit without the stress and risk of carrying an inventory, it would make sense to give it a try.

Work with a Wholesaler and Distributor

Here's how it works. You will need to get online to check out wholesale drop shippers. Many of them offer access to their product lines, and some of them carry tens of thousands of products from which you can choose. Some require a small monthly or annual fee to view their products while others accept a one-time fee for access to what amounts to a virtual warehouse.

When you have selected a distributor to work with, you'll need to know his/her wholesale rates for the products you want to sell. You should also find out how long the distributor will guarantee those rates. Discuss a method of contact so that you can place orders quickly and efficiently, and ask what the distributor's turn-around time is. Find out how and when they will expect payment. When the details are all set up, the process basically will consist of you taking an order and payment online and THEN contacting the distributor who will ship the order directly to your customer. Both the package and the packing slip should contain your logo and contact information.
