In order to successfully develop and launch a new product, many businesses find it imperative to have strong new product management. The project manager's job is a multi-tiered effort that involves coordinating both the departments that are involved in designing the project, as well as the clients or surrounding business departments. Project managers must also decide how to pursue product development, including deciding whether new knowledge or technologies are required for the development or not.

The intricacies of new product management often revolve around the fine line between budgetary constrictions and design integrity. The project manager must be able to efficiently exercise strong design principles and techniques, perform the required market research and testing, and take the necessary steps to refine the design of a project for a commercial market, all on time and within budget. The manager's job is made even more complex if employee instruction in new technologies or manufacturing processes is required.

Hiring External Product Management

Though most project managers are brought in as permanent parts of a business' development team, ID firms and product development consultancies may offer new product management services as well. Though it may seem that hiring an outsider for such an important job may be risky, there are many reasons to work with management consultants or freelance product managers.

One of the main reasons may be that external project managers can free up corporate resources to tackle long-term projects by tackling more immediate development needs. They may also bring in talented designers or have access to resources outside of the normal scope of the development team. Freelance managers may also bring a fresh, outside perspective into the development process, enhancing project understanding and product definition.
