The importance of having easily accessible first aid kits in any workplace cannot be understated. In any kind of work environment, in any line of work, emergencies can happen in the blink of an eye. Being prepared for those emergencies can save time, money, and most importantly, lives.

First aid kits are available as commercial, pre-packaged emergency kits, but you can also build your own. The first step in building a custom first aid kit is to assess the dangers of your workplace. Keep an eye out for potentially sharp edges, hot surfaces, or dangerous substances, and check the accident log. Also, by referring to Material Safety Data Sheets, you can find out what kind of treatment works best for which hazardous materials, should an emergency happen.

Other important items to consider include emergency rations, water, and medication. With these items, it is of the utmost importance that their expiration dates are noted, and the items restocked if necessary. Similarly, flashlight batteries should be checked often, and well stocked.

Installing A First Aid Kit

Many first aid kits are packaged in containers that are easily hung on the wall. By placing the first aid kit in an easily reachable place, you can reduce the likelihood of further injuries during an emergency. Paths to first aid kits from potentially hazardous areas should be obstacle free and as direct as possible.
