Latex Examination Gloves

Latex examination gloves are strictly regulated by a few different government and non-government agencies, including both the FDA and ASTM, or the American Society for Testing Materials. The rigorous standards that late examination gloves are subject to assure that health care workers and other medical professionals are effectively protected from many different workplace hazards, including harmful bloodborne pathogens. Medical grade latex gloves form a strong, protective barrier and because they're disposable as well, limit the possibility of contamination as well.

Latex examination gloves must pass a series of tests that have been developed by ASTM before they are approved for use in medical applications. If a batch of gloves or a machining process does not pass the tests, the gloves will be downgraded to B-grade, also called industrial grade status. Although all industrial grade gloves are not failed medical gloves, all failed medical gloves must be labeled as industrial grade.

The specifics for the standard for rubber examination gloves require that the type of glove have an AQL, or acceptable quality level, or 2.5% or less. This means that for every hundred gloved, only 2.5 flaws are permissible. The gloves must also have a minimum tensile strength of 2030 psi, and stretch to 700% their normal length.

The Difference Between Latex Examination Gloves and Surgical Gloves

While the standard regarding latex examination gloves may seem strict, the standard for surgical gloves is even stricter. The AQL must drop to (at the most) 1.5%, and the glove must be able to withstand 3480 psi in a tensile strength test. It also must have an elongation percent of at least 750%.
