Clinometers

Clinometers are excellent tools for filmmakers and photographers. Clinometers allow filmmakers to accurately predict the path of a sun before a shoot. Good lighting is essential to a smooth and successful film or commercial shoot. Having to readjust equipment because of shadowing can cost a commercial crew hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars an hour.

Clinometers and Inclinometers

Clinometers are relatively simple instruments that allow users to measure the angle of an inclination or an elevation. Calculating slope with one of these instruments, however, requires a clear sight path. In addition, they are not usually accurate to the point of being exactly precise.

An inclinometer measures angles very precisely. It can be used to measure side-to-side angles, or fore-to-aft (front to back) angles. Since an inclinometer can be used for so many different purposes, it can be made in a variety of sizes and styles, including miniature, glow in the dark, or digital.

The easiest and least expensive place to buy an inclinometer or clinometer is online. Make sure you factor the cost of delivery into the total cost of ordering the equipment, however. Look for reputable companies. I suggest using only those companies that have been around for longer than five years. Longevity is, hopefully, an indication of quality and honesty.
