Half mask respirators are used for many purposes. One purpose is to prevent lead poisoning by preventing the wearer from inhaling dust or fume containing lead. This is vital for construction workers where the work involves confinement in areas of lead products. This is a problem in many industrial environments and requires complete mask cooperation to avoid major health issues.

Before any one is required to wear a mask, they should have a medical examination to determine if they can wear a respirator without any problems. Smokers and anyone with a history of lung problems or difficulty breathing may not be a candidate for working in an environment requiring a mask respirator. It puts a lot of stress on the heart and lungs and some people just cannot handle the stress. If your hobby requires a mask for safety, be responsible and check with your healthcare provider before use.

Requirements for Half Mask Respirators

Some half mask respirators are made from molded silicone providing a comfortable lightweight mask. A self-adjusting nose bridge and specially designed head strap give the mask a secure fit. The mask of choice should be made of hypoallergenic material to avoid skin irritation. The type of filter or cartridge required will determine the design of the mask.

Comfortable half mask respirators should conform to the face without any pressure points. It should seal tightly around the edges with no air leaks. If air can leak out, harmful particulates can get in. A low profile mask should give plenty of room for safety goggles if needed. All safety equipment should meet the NIOSH standard set for it.
