SARS prevention is a major worldwide health concern. There are guidelines for individuals infected with the virus and there are guidelines for caretakers and the public in general. It is vital for anyone with the virus to cover the nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing. Hand washing is an absolute necessity in preventing the spread of SARS. Anyone using public facilities should thoroughly wash their hands frequently and specifically every time a public toilet is used.

SARS prevention guidelines recommend wearing a mask if there are symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, and cough. This will help contain the air-borne germs that can infect other people. SARS is such a highly contagious virus that it is recommended to take infection control measures for 7 days after all symptoms are gone. This means continuing to wear a mask when in public and avoid close contact with family.
