Energy Saving Products

In the last 15 years, an increasing number of energy saving products and appliances have become available for consumer use. Most large home appliances, from computers to microwaves and televisions, are now designed to reduce energy consumption and perform more efficiently. Both individual consumers and businesses are turning to energy efficiency as a way to increase quality of life and reduce utility bills.

New techniques in building and engineering also take advantage of energy saving products and sustainable construction materials to create green buildings. Heavily insulated walls, such as those formed by ICFs or SIPs (insulated concrete forms or structural insulated panels) use energy saving products such as durable foam insulation to reduce spatial conditioning (heating and cooling) costs. They also usually have other benefits, such as soundproofing.

Energy Saving Products and Programs for Businesses

In commercial sectors, large businesses are incorporating energy-efficient machinery and reducing and recycling waste material. Organizations such as the USGBC, or U.S. Green Building Council, exist to help businesses determine what types of products and techniques can help their operations. Green building can generally create a healthier workplace, good corporate image, and can ultimately save the business money by reducing operating costs.

Other organizations award products approval based on their performance in efficiency tests. A range of products are eligible for approval, and incentive programs are also available for qualifying businesses. Some such programs also have consumer information on their websites to help consumers perform renovations and increase energy efficiency in their household.
