If you want to become an owner operator driver, you will have to start with a professional driving school where you will learn how to handle several different types of loads. Most schools teach you the basics of how to handle the rig in general, how to back up, what to do in emergency situations, and what kinds of specialized skills will make you the most money. At the end of your classes, you will have to pass a federally mandated test in order to get your Commercial Drivers License (CDL). This license is accepted in every state and allows you to drive across state lines.

The next step is to get some experience driving big rigs for real. This doesn't have to take a long time, but you will want to know what type of rig you will buy when you're ready, and the best way to determine that is to drive. When you're ready to buy your rig, it's easier if you're on the road interacting with other drivers and seeing their trucks. That way, you will be able to compare and may even learn what the other truckers paid for their rigs.

Owner Operator Driver Advantages

If you've gained some experience driving and have purchased your own rig, you'll be ready to become an owner operator. Before you go out on the road, you will have to deal with insurance, maintenance plans, and how you will pay for gas, and more. The good thing about getting started is that there are several organizations you can find on the Internet that help to make the process easier and less expensive for you.

The advantages of owning your own rig are numerous. You will have total control over where you drive and what types of loads you haul. You can negotiate rates with shippers, especially when the shipper is in a hurry and can't get another driver. You can also establish relationships with freight brokers who will recommend you to shippers. You will be in charge of how much time you spend on the road and how much time you have to spend with your family. You will also be able to reap all of the benefits of your success.
