Plate Magnets

Disc magnets are sometimes known as plate magnets. Plate magnets are a fundamental component of many magnetic sculptures. I've been making magnetic sculptures for years, and I find that I use plates a lot. It's a basic shape that looks good in all sorts of geometric designs, and is fundamental to many representational designs, as well.

I like to sculpt with rare earth magnets, because of their superior strength. My favorite rare earths are NIBs, or Neodymium Iron Boron magnets. You may see these magnets described as NdFeB magnets, as well. They are strong, inexpensive, easy to find, and lightweight. Most people who sculpt with rare earth magnets sculpt with NIBs.

Although smaller sized magnets are at the heart of most sculpture designs, I find that a few oversized magnets are always fun to have around. You can find plate magnets which are very large in circumference. There's something really satisfying about playing with these oversized plates.

One of the main reasons I enjoy sculpting with NIBs is relaxation. There is something about handling these pieces that is very soothing and meditative. If you work behind a desk, try putting a magnetic sculpture in front of you that you feel comfortable moving and re-shaping. It's a great way to brainstorm, and a good stress reducer when talking on the phone.
