Rod Magnets

Rod magnets are among the essential NIB magnets in many magnetic sculptures. Along with round magnets and square magnets, rod magnets are a basic part of any sculptor's supply. I have a good supply of rods in a variety of sizes, and I find that I use them all the time.

I started sculpting with rare earth magnets a few years ago, and have just found it to be a really relaxing, fun hobby. Sometimes I give the sculptures away as gifts, and sometimes I keep them to display in my own home. I love the paradox of impermanence and durability that is at the heart of any rare earth sculpture. They're extremely strong, and extremely flexible at the same time.

Buying Rod Magnets

The best place to buy rod magnets, spherical magnets, and other NIBs is online. The prices are better and the variety is better online than anywhere else. Plus, it's just an incredibly convenient way to shop.

Look for a reputable company. How can you tell if a company is reputable or not? A recommendation by the Better Business Bureau is one way of separating the good guys from the bad guys. Also, look for companies with fair return policies. You never know when a shipment of NIBs is going to get chipped in the mail by an overly enthusiastic mail carrier!
