One of the easiest ways to ensure that hospital safety is up to par is by updating each facility's MSDS database. Like industrialists and machinists, doctors and other healthcare workers need reliable information on the compounds they're using. A nurse or surgeon may come into contact with hundreds of different solutions each day. One misstep, and the care of a patient may be jeopardized.

MSDS provide healthcare workers with all the important data they need, from the freezing and boiling points of everyday chemicals to their safe handling and storage specs. It's enough that doctors are responsible for the total health of their patients. Asking them to memorize obscure data on commonly used fluids and gases is simply unrealistic.

Who Ensures Hospital Safety?

The job of hospital safety does not fall to one individual in particular, which is both a good and a bad thing. On the one hand, it means there's no central hub of safety information for an entire hospital, nor are there key individuals whose job it is to make sure every office is in full compliance with the law. On the other hand, hospital safety is everybody's job, from program directors on down to janitorial crews. If everybody chips in to make sure substances are properly handled, the odds of an on-site accident drop significantly.

This takes the pressure off hospital workers to continually check in with chemical manufacturers and frees them up for more important tasks such as patient care.
