An OSHA safety manual contains all the information your business needs to meet the state and federal requirements for occupational safety. Regulations differ from state to state, so it's important that you check your local OSHA guidelines in addition to federal requirements. Regulations exist that govern everything from electrical safety to biological hazards.

It is OSHA's responsibility to ensure that business owners give their workers all the proper tools to operate in a safe environment. Even if employees aren't handling highly toxic chemicals, there are strict laws relating to the transportation, handling, and removal of most materials. These often include the enforcement of protective measures such as work gloves, masks, and ventilators.

It's likely that even the most vigilant managers are in violation of at least some minor safety regulations. Because it's impossible for any individual to know the minutiae of every rule in the OSHA safety manual, compliance becomes a group effort. Employers must work with employees on everything from kitchen safety and sanitation to the proper use of ladders and scaffolding. There are even guidelines pertaining to noise levels and possible hearing loss.

It's not enough simply to keep a comprehensive MSDS on file. While an MSDS database is certainly a good start (as well as a legal requirement), it takes a full-time effort to oversee that database and update it as new information is released on any of over a million different substances. This is when smart business owners hire an outside party to manage their MSDS and provide other services to aid in OSHA compliance.
