Disability Insurance FloridaWritten by Patricia Tunstall Disability insurance in Florida is not provided by the state. There are only five states--California, New York, New Jersey, Hawaii, Rhode Island--and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico that have state-sponsored programs for disabled workers. Income protection insurance in Florida would be handled by a private disability insurance carrier. Medicare aside, Florida does have its own Medicaid program. As in other states, this program provides assistance to low-income and disabled citizens. It stands to reason that these two groups would frequently overlap, since being unable to work cuts off wages. Florida Medicaid provides access to health care and medical services for those who cannot afford such care otherwise. Private InsuranceDisability insurance in Florida, as in other states, is divided into group and individual disability insurance. A smart employee should always ascertain what coverage is available from state sources or an employer before signing up for more expensive individual policies. If on-the-job coverage is provided, it might be wise to obtain that and get a supplementary individual policy, which has better benefits, but costs more. Either go online and compare information and policies offered by nationwide or state-based insurers, or consult a knowledgeable disability insurance agent. Pay close attention to definitions, such as "disability," for these determine your benefits. A policy that pays only if you are confined to a hospital is inadequate for a wage earner who has lost income entirely.
