Travel health insurance is coverage every traveler must have in order to be financially safe. If for some reason you became ill or were injured and needed international evacuation and an air ambulance, it could cost you as much as $90,000 or more. If you have purchased a tour or a cruise, it is unlikely you will be able to change your tickets without paying large penalties. Some even have a "No Refund" policy.

Most insurance plans in the United States do not offer enough coverage for travel and emergencies abroad. It requires obtaining a special travel health insurance plan to be sufficiently protected from the possibility of illness or injury while traveling out of the country. The financial setback could be devastating without adequate protection. Some policies offer as much as $5,000,000 medical limits for international travel.

More about Travel Health Insurance Coverage

Other areas covered in many of the travel health insurance plans include lost baggage reimbursement and compensation for baggage delays. You can also choose flight accident coverage. Coverage for trip cancellation is part of the benefits offered. If your trip is canceled for any reason listed in the policy's benefit description, you will be reimbursed according to the policy limits.

Most travel policies will have a long list of restrictions where benefits do not apply. This list includes such conditions as suicide or attempted suicide, an act of war, races, skydiving, bungee cord jumping, and many other activities. Some pre-existing restrictions may apply. Be sure to check the details carefully before obtaining health insurance to travel abroad.
