New York Bar Examiners evaluate an applicant's performance and knowledge on the New York Bar Exam. The exam is given over a two day period. It covers two major portions: the New York portion and the Multistate Bar Examination portion.

Grading and Obtaining Results from the New York Bar Examiners

An applicant must complete 250 multiple choice questions, five essay questions, and one Multistate Performance Test (MPT) to be considered for grading by the New York Bar Examiners. Results are given in the form of a written pass/fail notice. They are also mailed the same day.

There is no passing or failing on any one particular section of the exam. The total amount of points earned on the exam will determine whether or not an applicant will pass. A final weighted total score of 660 is required to pass the exam.

If an applicant has passed the exam, the New York Bar Examiners will send their results by mail and post their name on the New York Bar Exam site, as well as on the New York Law Journal site. If the applicant shows proof of completing the MPRE prior to taking the Bar Exam, they can then be certified by the Board to the Appellate Division where they reside.
