Online legal documents are a dime a dozen, and you want a fast and convenient place to download free legal forms. Perhaps you need a bill of sale, a will, or an eviction notice. Maybe a colleague asked about rental forms, divorce papers, powers of attorney, contracts, or employment agreements. There are many places where you can download free legal forms. What you need to be sure of is whether the forms you've got are any good. You need to know if they apply to your circumstances.

Things to Remember as You Download Free Legal Forms

One form is not as good as another. Law in the United States starts in Washington, DC in the federal system, of course. But as the founders understood (and developed the constitution to ensure), top-down law is inadequate and inappropriate. Law should, they determined, arise locally as well as descend from the top and mesh logically in the middle. Whatever your legal undertaking--domestic, civil, or criminal--the process and the paperwork will vary from state to state. You can't download free legal forms from anywhere and expect them to be the right ones.

This is a column in a series designed to help you think about what's involved in the legal process. It is not a legal resource. (I, for one, am not a lawyer.) But there are plenty of online legal resources out there, where you can find detailed explanations of current forms.

The best question for you once you think you understand the steps of the legal action you are taking is not necessarily where to download free legal forms in order to start the paperwork rolling. It might be to talk with someone who knows the process and the legal system and the paperwork. Making informed decisions sometimes means asking for help.
