Mobile advertising services rely on new technology that has allowed cell phones to link to the Internet. To be sure, cellular phones have proliferated in recent years, with each new line of phones offering more features than the last. However, it remains to be seen whether consumers will opt for this new form of cell phone enhancement.

Anyone interested in mobile advertising services is familiar with wireless application protocol, or WAP. This is a device that enables cell phones to access the Internet, and thus, to retrieve information from its databases. It is the centerpiece of wireless ads and directories.

Anticipating Consumer Response to Mobile Advertising Services

As mobile advertising services are fairly new, the relevant issue becomes one of whether consumers will opt for phones with this technology, and of course, whether they will respond to the ads they hear. The news is favorable on both fronts. First, consistent with existing trends, one can expect that consumers will respond positively to every new gadget added to a cell phone. After all, who would have thought they'd get so excited for camera phones?

With regard to whether consumers will respond to mobile advertising services, the outlook is equally favorable. A culture of instant gratification is also a culture of impulse buying, and mobile ads promote purchasing by catching people when they are most likely to spend. These features suggest that wireless ads may herald the dawn of a new era in advertising.
