Search engine promotion is one of the most effective ways to get people to visit your website. The more people that visit your website, the more chances you have of doing business. This is quite obvious. What isn't as obvious, however, is how to get people to your website. There are millions of sites out there. What's going to bring people to yours?

Targeting Your Site

Search engine promotion allows you to be specific in whom you are targeting. You can help target your site to people who are actually looking for your product or service. For this, consider doing sponsored links or pay-per-click advertising. They're the same thing. This is when you sign up with a company such as Google AdWords or Overture. You create an ad for your site and say how much you are willing to pay for keywords.

The better the keywords are, the more likely it is that your site will pop up at the right times. When someone clicks on your site, you pay. Google AdWords works with all Google engines, AOL, Lycos, Ask Jeeves and some others. Overture works with Yahoo, MSN, AltaVista, Excite and a few others. If you don't know what you're doing, you can sign up with an online marketing company that will take care of everything for you. You will want them to provide a report on how your keyphrases are performing, however, since therein lies the accountability.

Once you have people at your site, what is going to keep them there? As they say, the first impression is always the most important. You will want your site to be similar to your top competitors'. However, if you note that any of your competitors have weaknesses, make sure those become strengths for you. In addition, many customers are very concerned with security. By making that an important point on your site, people will feel they can trust you with a purchase.
