Despite a stern appearance, Bull Terriers are merry companions who are loyal to their families and friendly to strangers. They thrive on affection and attention and are willing to give lots of affection in return. Bull Terriers are good with kids and often get along well with other dogs.

Bull Terriers are very active and fit well into families that are active, too. A family that spends a lot of time outside, whether in their yard or taking outings, is the perfect environment for a Bull Terrier. Bull Terriers are best suited for homes where they receive near constant companionship, for instance with retired persons or stay at home parents. A Bull Terrier who is left alone for too long will become bored and destructive.

What to Look for in a Bull Terrier

Bull Terriers are luckily free of most of the genetic disorders that afflict other dog breeds. When you’re picking out a Bull Terrier at a breeder's, you do need to check for deafness, which does sometimes occur in Bull Terriers. This can be hard to detect at young ages, even for experienced breeders but good breeders will always have health guarantees that allow you to bring the dog back if you’re unhappy with it.

A good breeder will encourage or sometimes even require buyers to spay or neuter dogs that will become solely companion pets. This kind of responsible behavior is the kind you want to see in a breeder. This is a sign that the breeder is educated and savvy, which usually means that they are most concerned with the health of their dogs and the maintenance of breed standards.
