Dachshund Breeders

Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt badgers. Their proximity to the ground helped them run quickly through forest brush and their diminutive size helped them to burrow into badger holes. As a result, the breed is tenacious, brave, and loyal.

The Dachshund’s unusual shape is part of what makes it such a fun dog to be around, but also is the cause of ailments it may develop. Dachshunds are very prone to back problems. From the day you bring your Dachshund home, you should be doing everything in your power to make sure he or she doesn’t jump onto or off of furniture and avoids going up and down stairs often.

This may sound like a difficult and even cruel rule to enforce, but the many Dachshund owners who have been through expensive and painful back problems with their Dachshund will tell you that it’s worth it. Slipped disks can be very painful and may even paralyze a dog if they’re bad enough. A little caution and discipline can go a long way.

In order to have a higher chance of avoiding back injuries, you’ll need to fully investigate any breeders you’re interested in buying from. A recommendation is a good place to start, but you’ll need to do a lot of personal research. Visit several breeders in order to broaden your perspective. Try not to fall in love with puppies when you see them and approach the decision from a sensible, logical viewpoint.
