Teacup Chihuahuas

Teacup Chihuahuas are extremely popular among toy dog enthusiasts. Like regular six pound Chihuahuas, the teacup variety are enthusiastic, loyal and energetic dogs. They make great pets for people who live in cities or small apartments and can be wonderful traveling companions as well.

The American Kennel Club (or AKC) does not formally recognize the existence of teacup Chihuahuas. Because Chihuahuas are in the toy dog classification to begin with, they do not further label different sizes of the Chihuahua. Thus, when you hear the terms "teacup," "miniature," or "pocket" associated with the Chihuahua breed, they are simply terms meaning "smaller than normal."

Most teacup Chihuahuas are three to four pounds in size and have all the characteristics of their larger cousins. They are feisty and are extremely protective of their owners. They are thus quite entertaining when they try and protect their loved ones with their seriously "ferocious" stature.

How to Successfully Buy Teacup Chihuahuas

Because Chihuahuas make such good conversation starters, it is tempting to go ahead and buy just any small "teacup" one. However, it is important to get all the information from the breeders regarding the puppy's (or dog's) temperament and medical history. While puppies can be brought up to overcome the typical "negative characteristics" of his breed, an adult is bought as is and should be brought into the household with all his personality traits, positive or otherwise.
