Pet Nutritional SupplementsWritten by Sarah Provost As with similar products for humans, it's sometimes difficult to separate fact from hype when learning about pet nutritional supplements. Holistic practitioners, in particular, recommend a wide range of herbs and tinctures, both for maintenance and for treatment of disorders. Sites which have nothing to sell, however, usually recommend on a few supplements, and those mainly for older animals. Pet Nutritional Supplements for Senior AnimalsPet nutritional supplements can be useful in maintaining the health of older animals. Omega-6 fatty acid is a nutrient essential for healthy skin and coat, particularly in dogs. Vitamin E supplements help older cats maintain an appropriate level of antibodies, and both dogs and cats can benefit from increased antioxidants. There are also enzyme supplements to help prevent digestive upsets in older dogs. Joint health is a problem for many dogs, particularly the larger breeds. There is some clinical evidence that vitamin C, when administered in a compound called Ester-C to reduce digestive upsets, can help significantly in increasing mobility in dogs. Glucosamine has become as popular for joint health in dogs as it has for humans, and is included in almost all nutritional compounds. Multivitamin and mineral pet nutritional supplements won't harm anything except your wallet, and might do some good. But be aware that it's important to pick a supplement for your pet which is appropriate to the animal's size and weight. Different sizes and breeds of dog require different combinations of ingredients, so choose a supplement that offers differing preparations for small and large dogs.
