A Brief History of Calabasas

The Chumash Indians were the original inhabitants of the area that would become Calabasas. They hunted game and collected acorn and grains for food and even started controlled fires every 3 to 5 years to boost plant growth in the area. With the arrival of Spanish explorers and settlers in the late 1700s, the Chumash were forced out of their native lands.

The Spaniards first arrived in expeditions to determine whether the land could be settled. Later, missionaries arrived to convert the Chumash to Christianity. Finally, the settlers arrived and brought with them farming and ranching. They raised livestock and planted crops. The land remained ranching and farming land until the demand for land for homes became so great that farmers and ranchers began to break up their land and sell it as plots for homes.
