Initiatives were passed that barred the development of undeveloped areas around the cities of Ventura County. This set it apart from neighboring Los Angeles County, which suffers from dense population and heavy air pollution as a result.

Realtors in Ventura County have a challenge when working with customers who are moving into Ventura County. The county is almost built out, which means there are only houses available if someone wants to sell theirs. There are rarely new homes available to incoming residents.

In a twist of fate, the county's new housing bureau chief recently resigned because he was unable to purchase a home in Ventura County on his $80,000 salary. It seems residents of Ventura County aren't willing to have higher population densities and as a result, there is a severe housing shortage in the county. Trying to preserve the original intent of a rural-feeling area coupled with the constant influx of new residents has placed a great strain on the county.
