In Florida, you must pass through several levels of appraisal experience before you can become a state certified general appraiser or instructor. There are several very good Florida real estate appraisal schools in the state offering courses that will help you to take the first step and then to progress as far as you want to go. In order to become an appraiser, you will have to start at the bottom.

Categories of Real Estate Appraisers in Florida

Florida real estate appraisal schools will start you off as a state registered trainee appraiser. To achieve this level, you must take 75 hours of board-approved courses, and you must be registered with the DBPR as qualified to perform appraisal services under the direct supervision of a state certified appraiser. You do not have to take a state exam or provide proof of experience to attain the first level.

To become a state certified residential appraiser, you must take the appropriate 120 hours of board-approved courses at any of the board-approved Florida real estate appraisal schools. As a state certified appraiser, you must be able to demonstrate that you have had 2,500 hours of appraisal experience within the preceding two years. You must also earn a passing grade on the Florida state exam.

State Certified General Appraiser

A certified general appraiser is fully qualified to perform appraisal services for any real property. This includes both residential and commercial property. This level of certification requires 180 hours of course work at one of the approved Florida real estate appraisal schools as well as at least 3,000 hours of experience including at least 50% in non-residential services. A passing grade on the state exam is also required.
