Development of Plantation, Florida real estate began only after Walter Holloway's failed attempt in 1906 to drain the Everglades for farming. Repeated attempts to drain the Everglades led to something of a land boom in Florida during the 1920s. The founding father of Plantation, Florida real estate, Frederick Peters came in with his family from Missouri in 1931.

Peters introduced to the state what are now known as Florida red potatoes and made them popular with the marketing phrase "Peter's Patent Potatoes Peel Pretty." He then developed an interest in cattle farming, and began looking for grazing lands. In 1941 he bought 10,000 acres in largely undeveloped Broward County for some $250,000.

Founded on April 30, 1953, the city of Plantation boasted a budget of $1,288 and a population of fewer than 500. Plantation, Florida real estate was valued during the late 1950s and early 1960s at from $17,000 to more than $50,000. The city grew steadily during the 1960s and 1970s. Fortunately, the village atmosphere stayed with it. By 1982 the budget was some $64 million and the population about 50,000. By the time of the 2000 census, the population had grown to 82,000.
