Just six or seven miles south of Daytona Beach, the city of Port Orange has a long history by Florida standards. Established in 1867 along the Halifax River, it remained a small community for more than 100 years. Only in recent decades has it, thanks to careful planning, expanded gracefully from a population of not quite 4,000 in 1970 into one of more than 50,000 and a more metropolitan character. At the core of Port Orange are its neighborhoods, some 150 in all.

Port Orange's Rich, Long History

Conveniently situated along Interstate 95 near its juncture with Interstate 4, Port Orange sits on nearly 27 square miles in Volusia County. Daytona Beach International Airport is conveniently nearby, as are three state roads, and the tracks of the Florida East Coast Railroad. Orlando's international airport, 29 miles west on Interstate 4, is also within easy range. As far as residents and visitors are concerned, the city is served by Votran public transportation and is complemented by 32 miles of biking and hiking trails.

A rock-solid community for raising a family, Port Orange boasts an extremely low crime rate, a strong school system, and a small-town ambiance. All the amenities and recreational opportunities of the Florida coast--including the beach, deep-sea fishing, water sports, biking and hiking, spectacular golfing--are also ready to hand. Disney, Epcot, Lake Okeechobee, and far more are within an hour's drive, for example.

Not only a great place to call home, Port Orange real estate is also a sound financial investment. Its approximately 20,000 homes are more than 80 percent owner occupied. Selling prices for single-family homes are affordable, running today from about $70,000 up to $400,000. Typical apartment rentals go for about $450 to $900 a month, depending on size and location. Given that there are only perhaps 200 properties on the market at any given time, it's probably a good idea to scout out a real estate agent to help you with your search.
