One of Money Magazine's best places to live in the United States, the village of Wellington is certainly a gem amidst the white Florida sands. It blends home-town ambiance, a spectacular subtropical climate, lush natural surroundings, and the lowest per capital and valorem tax in Palm Beach County. Surrounded by 315 acres of lakes and more than 74 miles of canals, Wellington encompasses some 1,400 acres of lush parkland.

Wellington: A Gem amidst the Sand

A more delightful place to live is hard to find. As far as leisure activities are concerned, Wellington offers tennis, 29 championship golf courses within a 30-mile radius, botanical gardens and arboreta, spectacular bird watching and hiking trails, and 25 theatrical venues within the same 30-mile radius. The area abounds in restaurants, cafes, movie theaters, and civic groups. Wellington's Parks and Recreation Department offers community activities and classes that include yoga, dancing, watercolor painting, team tennis, youth soccer, aquatics, and far far move.

The average home price is about $200,000--ranging from about $175,000 up to $1.5 million. These figures are going market prices, not the median value of $165,000 set at the last federal census. Property taxes, per $1000 of assessed value, are lower than the national average, specifically, $19 versus $25. (Florida, of course, has no personal income tax and its sales tax of six percent is also lower than the national average.)

Wellington is as ideal for raising a family as it is for young adults and retirees, which the median age of 36 reflects. More than two-thirds of its adult residents are married, only 4 percent widowed, and 20 percent never married. Nearly 14 percent of its more than 40,000 residents are foreign born. Wellington's median income is about $76,000, higher than the national figure of $63,000. With a low crime rate, a strong public and private school system, and easy rail, road, and air access, Wellington has much to recommend it as a place to live.
