The History of Offutt

Offutt Air Force Base is basically a large military installation and is home to the US Air Force's central command. In addition the air force's largest combat command unit is based at Offutt Air Force Base. Locally known as Stratcomm, the base provides jobs for locals and obviously there are a lot of airmen stationed there from all over the US.

The area began as Fort Cook when it was opened in 1891 by President Benjamin Harrison. It was named Offutt Field in 1924 in memory of the first US casualty of WWI, Lt. Jarvis J. Offutt. Just before WWII, the area was home to a plant that produced B-26 and B-29 bombers. In fact, the Enola Gay and Bock's Car, were built here. These were the two aircraft that dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki after Pearl Harbor.

The Met

But notable though these point are, they are not the only reasons Offutt Air Force Base is famous. Today it is home to the largest military meteorological facility in the entire world. This means it provides a service to the entire US forces and more.

A small town has grown up around Offutt Air Force Base to provide satellite services for the base. Residents of Offutt Air Force Base have wide opportunities open to them due to the proximity of Omaha and several other notable Nebraska cities.
