Created three days after Christmas in 1847 out of what is now Marion County, Linn County encompasses 2,297 square miles and sits in the northwest quadrant of the state. The Linn County seat, first Brownsville, has been in Albany since 1851. Linn was administered by a county court from 1847 until 1970, when the court was replaced with a panel of commissioners. The countywide population in 2003 stood at about 106,000. The economy depends heavily on lumber and wood products.
