Many loan officers who specialize in mortgage loans take great pride in being able to use their knowledge of the lending process to help clients fulfill their dreams of home ownership. Mortgage brokers and loan officers frequently work with real estate brokers; some mortgage brokers are also licensed real estate brokers. A real estate broker is an independent businessperson who sells property owned by others. To become a licensed real estate broker, applicants must have a high school diploma, be at least 18 years old, and pass a written test that includes questions on basic real estate transactions. Most states also require prospective real estate brokers to have a certain amount of formal classroom training and related work experience. In some cases, experience requirements can be waived or reduced for applicants with a related bachelor's degree. In most states, a real estate broker's license does not cover mortgage brokerage activity. Sixty percent of real estate brokers are self employed. Many people choose to work part-time and combine their real estate businesses with other careers. Beginning real estate brokers can expect to face competition from their more experienced counterparts. Successful real estate brokers rely heavily on their sales training and referrals from previous clients to generate business in this highly competitive market. A Day in the Life of a Real Estate BrokerA real estate broker needs to have strong social skills to be successful in this career. Much of a real estate broker's typical day is spent networking and negotiating. Real estate brokers must be sensitive to the needs of both property owners and prospective buyers. A real estate broker often works nights and weekends in order to meet with clients, show a property to prospective buyers, and answer questions about the purchasing process. Real estate brokers also develop relationships with mortgage lenders, attorneys, and contractors by referring their clients to these individuals.
