San Marcos CommunitiesWritten by Blaire Chandler-Wilcox San Marcos, Texas is a charming and growing community located 25 miles southwest of Austin and about 50 miles northeast of San Antonio. The San Marcos River runs for 75 glittering miles through the city, around which is built a bustling river parks community. The city is also home to a branch of the Texas State University system. San Marcos has a diverse population of just under 50 thousand residents, about half of which are students who attend the university. The other half are largely professionals who work in San Marcos or commute north to Austin. The population is growing at a rate of approximately five percent, as opposed to the 1.7 percent of the rest of the state. Ready for Take-OffSan Marcos is more than prepared for this population growth to continue. A much awaited commuter train, which would connect the entire Austin-San Marcos-San Antonio corridor, is in development. Local thoroughfares have been widened to accommodate growing traffic needs. And multiple big-money development projects are in the works, making San Marcos increasingly attractive to its current residents, as well as potential ones. In addition to the university, tourism, metal and plastic works, transportation and lighting equipment are all local industries. Another major draw are the highly popular A-list outlet malls which provide a wide variety of goods and services not only to residents, but to hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. In addition to making San Marcos a good place to do business, the city officials place great emphasis on the beauty of her environment, and are very active in maintaining the many public green spaces around the city.
