San Marcos River Real EstateWritten by Blaire Chandler-Wilcox Retirees find lots of reasons for investing in real estate along the San Marcos River. San Marcos, as a community, has a lot to recommend it to retirees. And the river provides ample opportunities for socializing, recreation and entertainment. Everyone knows that Texas, in general, is a popular spot for retirees, because, like Florida, residents don't pay income tax. On the other hand, property taxes can be high in Texas. However, most find they pay much less, overall, in Texas than they would in other states. And in San Marcos, specifically, property taxes are lower than in other communities simply because the cost of living is lower, as compared to other popular areas like Dallas, Houston, and metropolitan Austin. Shall We Gather at the River?Yet, despite its lower cost of living, recreational pleasures abound in this lovely Texas town. Owning a home along the San Marcos River allows residents to enjoy swimming, fishing, walking and bike trails all in their own backyard. Birdwatching, fishing, swimming, and just lazing by the river are all popular local pastimes. Plus, the city of San Marcos features not one but two beautiful golf courses--one public, one semi-private-- making owning a home along the San Marcos River akin to resort living. Entertainment, too, is far from being in short supply here. There are plenty of movie theatres, restaurants, live theater, blues and country music venues, and art galleries to occupy an evening. And many retirees find great pleasure enrolling in one of the hundreds of continuing education classes up at the university. Many locals, retirees or otherwise, also enjoy being university sports spectators. In short, San Marcos provides a stimulating lifestyle for people of all ages and interests. As Georgia O'Keeffe said, "It's never too late to be what you might have become." San Marcos is a place one can build a house, build a life, and build one's self.
