Online Communities

The classic description of online communities consists of Internet-based gathering places where countless users would be able to virtually discuss important or trivial topics of interest for a variety of purposes.  Some communities are social in nature, allowing people to create friendships or even romantic possibilities online. Others have important business interests in mind, allowing online professional networking to take place.

There is an incredibly vast array of online communities for an individual to choose from, depending on her personal tastes. If she wishes to find local single men who enjoy athletic adventures, for example, she may want to sign up with an Internet community that is filled with singles who love fitness and sports. If she wishes to connect with someone on her faith-based spirituality, however, she should probably find a group of people who share her love and passion for religion.

What to Expect on Online Communities

Whatever your interest is on the online community of your choice, you also have a few options when it comes to communication tools. Email is, of course, the most common person to person email method of connecting to people. However, there are several real-time applications like online chat rooms and instant messaging systems which are encoded into websites to allow members to virtually converse via their computers.

You have to expect to follow a few rules and courtesies when signing up with an online community. Sites will usually provide a member FAQ page, written by a supervising monitor member, that will outline expected behavior and procedures. If any disputes or bouts of rudeness break out between members, this FAQ should also be used as a guide to calm and resolve the dispute.
