For Strength of Youth is one of the dogmas of the Mormon Church that specifically relates to the young adults of their community. It is a guideline for how young Mormons are expected to conduct themselves. Organized by 20 topics of interest, the purpose of this doctrine is to set the standard for behavior and morality for young Mormons. Thus, these topics are called "standards."

For Strength of Youth Standards

The first standard is Agency and Accountability. This chapter stresses that, while everyone is free to choose their actions, they are not free to choose their consequences. Some of the standards are taken from the Bible and others are from Mormon scripture. Gratitude, for example, is derived from the Gospel of Luke, while chapters on Friends, Appearance and Education are from the Mormon Doctrines and Covenants. Some standards, such as the chapter on Sexual Purity, are from both sources.

The standards within this document are always referenced in some way to the Bible and its teachings on this subject. The Mormon Church often uses Old Testament Scripture to back up its teachings. Thus a young person can open the Bible and get an affirmation of Mormon doctrine. For Strength of Youth is a Mormon document, but it is rooted in the beliefs of the Christian faith. Even specific requirements, such as Tithing, are based upon the Bible's exhortation to give generously so as to receive blessings.

By attending to the morals and character of its youth, the Mormon Church strives to groom them for active roles in the faith community. By creating a society whereby most people have similar values and ascribe to the same belief system, the Church hopes to attain its ultimate goal--to restore the original Christian Church on Earth. For Strength of Youth addresses each new generation of Mormons who will eventually be responsible for helping to fulfill this destiny.
