Sermons on leadership may be geared either toward leaders themselves or toward people who are assessing their leaders or potential leaders in modern times. First, we must not be deceived by flash or obfuscation, but rather, must look deeper to see the value of someone who wishes to lead us. Then, if we wish to lead ourselves, we must genuinely and honestly look at our own motives and prepare ourselves for the responsibilities.

Scripture Relevant to Sermons on Leadership

Matthew 20:26-28 offers one thing Jesus said about leadership. When two brothers wanted immediately to become great and powerful simply because they believed in Christ, Jesus told them this would be wrong: "Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave." While the idea of slavery is too extreme, especially for modern times, the sentiment is that in order to understand people and become a good leader you must know them from all perspectives. You must also believe that in many ways, leading people is serving them.

Too many leaders want the money or power that comes with a position of leadership. The Bible cautious countless times against this, as the passage from Matthew 20 indicates. The ideal in leadership is to lead people into a better situation, not to better your own. Sermons on leadership will very likely emphasize this fact.

There is also the fact that we are all called upon in our own ways to be leader. A parent, for example, is a leader for his or her children, and sets an example with his or her own values, words, and actions which is incredibly powerful for the child. Even if a parent did not initially want this power or responsibility, they will find that they have it, and it is likely that sometimes they will seek help from the church to do the best they can with it. Sermons on leadership can remind us of all the ways we lead in our lives and how vigilant we must be to do so well.
