Applicant background checks are desirable for many employers when they are trying to make hiring decisions. Many employers are concerned about hiring truly honest and high-quality employees. When background checks are used, employers can find out whether or not applicants have provided accurate information about themselves on applications. They can also find out if applicants have been involved in criminal activities or anything that could potentially be detrimental to the company.

Information about Applicant Background Checks

Background checks are most commonly used to aid in hiring decisions. However, they can also be accessed regarding current employees. As long as they are used for employment purposes, employers can utilize background checks at any time. Reasons for using background checks on current employees may include promotions, evaluations, or reassignments. Sometimes, business owners will access background checks to find grounds for firing and then for hiring new employees as well.

Rules regarding background checks are covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, or FCRA. This law can sometimes be mistaken for the credit reporting law, but is actually more extensive in scope. It also focuses on personal characteristics, modes of living, general reputations, and qualities of character. The FCRA states that background checks should only be collected for employment purposes.

The FCRA is needed to ensure a level of privacy among consumers. It limits who can have access to public records and background checks. Since background checks can make a large impact on whether or not an individual is hired, the FCRA makes sure that the information is accurate. The FCRA does not require all employers to conduct background checks on applicants. Employers can choose whether or not they feel background checks are necessary for hiring.
