Background Security Checks

The terrorist attacks of September 11 strengthened our country's determination to improve safety and security. Background security checks are now required by the government for many industries. Examples would be all airline employees and financial service employees. Numerous other employers are electing to use background screening as an important part of the hiring process.

Benefits of Background Security Checks

The current emphasis on security has made background screening a rapidly growing industry. Many employers choose online sources who deliver convenience and efficiency. By using these companies, human resource managers now have access to huge databases of information on job applicants as well as current employees. They are able to discover discrepancies on job applications that could prevent costly mistakes in hiring decisions. In past years, detailed reports were only available through time-consuming "hand checking" of public records, courthouses, etc.

Background security checks today are detailed and complete. They usually include reports on criminal history, address history, credit records, employment records, and civil court records. Some problems typically detected are identity theft, felony convictions, aliases, bankruptcies, foreclosures, and legal judgments. Birth dates and social security numbers are verified during screening. Reputable websites will give advice and urge caution when interpreting negative information on a report.

Many people have false information on their records. Common reasons are transposed numbers or identities that have been stolen. Employees must be informed if an employer plans adverse action based upon a background check. They must receive a copy of the report and a copy of their rights. They must also be given an opportunity to dispute negative information.
