Doctor's Background Checks

While most doctors are of impeccable character and are veritable cornerstones of the communities they serve, every now and then an individual turns up who is so bad that there are repercussions for years after their appointments. Even minor character flaws in a doctor are regarded by many to be unacceptable. Professional ability should also be beyond reproach. So is there anything we can do to ensure that the process of hiring a doctor is as reliable as possible?

To begin with, there probably needs to be more than one person involved in the hiring process for doctors. Most medical establishments such as clinics and hospitals have a committee for this purpose, and that's as it should be. In addition, thorough background checks are an absolute requirement.

Conducting a Thorough Background Check

Don't expect that any instant check is going to turn up all the information you'll require. Doctor's background checks need to be exhaustive to make sure that they have no criminal record, no history of mental illness, and no history of any kind of strange behavior. There will need to be a check for malpractice suits, too.

Even a doctor's credit records need to be checked. Someone who has large debts may be open to threats or stress that could compromise the ability to work. At the very least, it must be established that someone claiming to be a doctor actually holds the qualifications they claim. There have been numerous cases of imposters claiming to be doctors, and even performing operations when they have never set foot in a medical school.
